The National Recreation Area (NRA) designation acknowledges the high quality of recreational opportunities that exist in the Moosalamoo region. Arrive here via the gateway communities of Brandon, Middlebury or Rochester, Vermont to enjoy the more than 70 miles of well-maintained trails for year-round recreation.
Whether you want a family outing, romantic wedding, day hiking, cross-country or back country skiing, mountain biking, an overnight camp out, or maybe just a weekend escape to enjoy the beautiful surroundings in peace, the Moosalamoo NRA has it all.

HikingWith more than 70 miles of well-maintained trails, there are many day hikes with a variety of distances and difficulty. Hike to a scenic overlook, quiet stream or pristine lake only accessible on foot. MNRA also includes the handicap-accessible Robert Frost Interpretive Trail. Reserve space at Branbury State Park, Silver Lake or Moosalamoo campgrounds. You can make multi-day hikes with MNRA as your base camp and access huts operated by the Vermont Huts Association. Camping choices and locations | MOUNTAIN BIKING Wanna ride? You've come to the right place. MNRA offers awesome trails including the 14-mile Grand Tour of Moosalamoo and the 11-mile Chandler Ridge/Leicester Hollow Loop. SWIMMING & BOATING In the heart of the MNRA are two pristine bodies of water-- Silver Lake and Sugar Hill Reservoir at Goshen Dam. Both offer quiet places to wade, splash and paddle. Plunge into a crisp, mountain fed pool on the Falls of Lana trail or hit the beach at Branbury State Park. | HUNTING & FISHING
Hunt in the forests, fields and wetlands of the MNRA. Hunted is permitted throughout the GMNF, with a few exceptions. Fish in the streams, ponds, and lakes for brook, brown, rainbow and lake trout, salmon, bass, pike, yellow perch, smelt and panfish.
| SNOW SPORTSIf you live in or visit Vermont during the winter, you have to love snow and getting outdoors. There are several winter sports opportunities within the MNRA--snow shoeing, backcounty skiing and snowmobiling on a network of trails. |
BIRDING | BERRY PICKING | WALKING TRAILS & TOURS |
Wild berries abound. Pick them while hiking on one of MNRA's 70 miles of trail, in the blueberry management area or pick cultivated blueberries at the eponymously named Blueberry Hill Inn in Goshen. | Robert Frost spent his summers at the nearby Bread Loaf School of English. To commemorate this, vignettes of several poems are mounted along the trail in the woods and fields. The Robert Frost Interpretive Trail is suitable for children, elderly or disabled. Learn more |
